Tips on Preventing Common Basketball Injuries
Many basketball players are spending their summer getting ready for the next year of games. If you are one of these athletes, you may be training in a camp, playing in a summer youth basketball league, or working out in a basketball clinic. Maybe you are just training on your own, working on how to get better at the sport. No matter what type of training you are doing, the one thing you want to avoid is an injury. We have all heard basketball stories of someone who got hurt in the off season and spent the rest of the year sitting on the bench. While it is important that you keep training, follow these tips to prevent an injury.
Use the Summer as a Break
If you have any remaining injuries from the previous year, you need to use the beginning of the summer to let yourself rest and heal. Start your summer with a physical with your doctor to make sure you are in good health. You may want to see a physical therapist to help you through any difficult injuries.
If you need to use the start of summer to recuperate from an injury, it is important that when you get back into playing, you take it slowly. Pushing yourself too hard too soon can result in an injury that may sit you out for the rest of the summer or even into the school year.
One of the most important things you can do to prevent a basketball injury is stretch and warm up before every game. Start with a short warm-up, and then move on to stretches. Since you are moving your entire body during basketball, it is important to stretch all of your major muscle groups.
Wear Proper Shoes
Wearing the proper shoes is another key to avoiding a basketball injury. Ankle injuries are one of the most common injuries in basketball. No matter when or where you are playing, you should always wear a pair of shoes that are made for basketball. These shoes should fit you well, have non-skid soles, and have a high top to support your ankles.
As with any sport, it is important that you stay hydrated. Make sure to drink plenty of water before, during, and after a workout or game. It is imperative that you do not wait until you are overly thirsty to drink water, as you will run the risk of dehydration.
Be Careful of Heat Exhaustion or Stroke
If you are playing outside in the summer heat, you must be careful to avoid heat exhaustion or heat stroke. Take frequent breaks, drink lots of water, and know the signs of a problem.
Go to the Gym
Many basketball injuries happen to the knees and ankles. One of the best ways to prevent these injuries is to spend time strengthening these muscles. Talk with your trainer to develop some workouts you can do to strengthen your ankles and knees.
